An Ode to Singapore’s Trishaws

Earlier this year, the Singapore Tourism Board confirmed with local news outlets that trishaw services have ceased operations in Singapore, with the last remaining operator’s license having ended.

In light of this news, World Express considers the vibrant tapestry of Singapore’s trishaw history as enduring symbols of a bygone era.

Trishaws historically served as a popular mode of transportation, especially in the early to mid-20th century when they first graced Singapore’s streets. They were widely used for short-distance travel within urban areas, offering a convenient means of getting around before motorized vehicles became prevalent. Trishaws were also integral to the city’s cultural and social fabric, providing both locals and tourists alike with a unique way to experience Singapore’s streets and landmarks. They played a role too in the economy, providing employment for many trishaw pullers who relied on fares from passengers for their livelihood. These pedal-powered chariots, often adorned with colourful decorations, became cultural icons, reflecting the city’s cosmopolitan spirit and resilience. World Express too had featured many trishaw tours as part of past programs in recent years.

With their decline over recent decades, attributed to modernization and changing transport needs, their absence leaves a nostalgic void in Singapore’s urban landscape.

Even so, their legacy still persists in the collective memory of locals and visitors alike, a testament to the ingenuity and hard work of those who once pedaled through the city’s bustling streets. These interweaving tales of heritage and community remain cherished always by us.
